It’s been a fun month so far for my 31 days of wild, I’ve been outside more, the kids have been out more. I’ve even been effecting friends I’m hanging who get hauled out onto moorland to fly kites! Check out the first two parts of this challenge here.
Day 16 >> WASSAIL
Part of this challenge is finding wild in the city. Just around the corner from where we live is a great community orchard and they were having a wassail. Which is a Medieval drinking ritual intended to ensure a good cider apple harvest the following year. We decorated apple trees, watched some good ‘ol English Morris Dancing and drank mulled cider.
Day 17 >> WINTER SWIM
I was pretty worried about this challenge. I was really scared to get in. But it wasn’t nearly as cold as I thought it might be. I got in quite slowly as it can be quite dangerous to jump straight in. I got in and just started swimming as fast as I could, but my muscles gave out quite quickly which was a bit of a shock. I was in for about 60-90″ – apparently after 90″ your body get’s used to it, so it’s worth persisiting. But I got out quite quick and defrosted with a thermos of coffee. My skin hours later was still feeling alive and I also felt like I swam many lengths even though I was only in for about a minute. I’ve heard that it’s quite good for your immune system, I’ve even heard it’s quite good for your sex life!
Day 18 >> WILD CITY
Most lunch hours, when I’m not working, I’m reading sport or just surfing the internet. For this lunch hour I again hopped on my bike and went to a park which I’d never been too. It’s actually protected by Avon Wildlife Trust and has some amazing streams, little wild corners and also an orchard. I love finding wild in the city. I found a little corner and eat my sandwiches.
Day 19 >> TAKE KIDS HIKING
I was working from home today and Beautiful Tribe was ill so I took the kids for a bit of a ramble and to look for snow in the mountains. I thought that more of the snow would have lasted from the heavy dump over the weekend. Most of it had melted, but we had a nice little wander and found a few patches. I think my 4yo was pretty excited to see her first real mountain. She was a bit confused that it wasn’t pointy like how she draws them.
Day 20 >> DAWN PHOTO WALK
I’ve wanted to take a dawn walk in the frost since last winter. It was a good morning, frost everywhere with clear skies. I’m trying to train myself to get up early. It’s kind of working, this is a series of kinda early starts I’m going to have that might kick start a habit. So nice to get out in the freshness and be creative before work.
Day 21 >> MOUNTAIN BIKE BEFORE WORK
I felt really tired this morning, but crawled out of bed and out onto the local trails in Leigh Woods before heading to work in Bristol. We’re lucky to have this on our doorstep.
Day 22 >> FOREST RUN
We went off to Brighton for the weekend. As soon as the kids were in bed I had to rudely bail on our hosts and go for a quick run and take a fun photo. After the 3.5 hour drive it was great to get some fresh air and some exercise. It’s amazing running in the moon light though the forest.
Day 23 >> KITE FLYING IN THE MIST
I love the South Downs, when I lived in Brighton I used to do a lot of mountain biking up there, despite the mist we went up for wander. Kites are an amazing motivator for kids to get out and going, in fact our boot is full of useful things like this for such occasions.
