I’ve been on trails, mountain biking with groups but I’ve never been on the road with a club. I’ve always gone solo and at strange times because of the kids. But I found a crew that are all parents that head out mid week evenings. These are some observations from my first group ride and about my gradual morphing into a roadie (check the route on Strava)…
Cycling in Wales is beautiful.
I don’t like lycra. I’m going to stick to shorts. I can see myself getting some bib shorts if I ever do a sportif. But until then, I’m wearing shorts. But I do need pockets in my jersey, I’m thinking of getting this Vulpine top or maybe this Howies one.
Be a bit more measured on the hills. My legs gave way with 10 miles to go. I do quite like going up hills, but going down is better.
I’m not fit enough. The transition from commuting to a longer 50miler is tough. One of my New Years resolutions was to do 100km, so I need to continue to ramp up the miles and hope my body adjusts.
I’m learning to slip stream. I was told to stay close and a touch to the right in case I had to bail. You save 30% apparently and the guys really brought me home.
I learned you have to point at pot holes for the guy behind.
Also I left my front light at home charging. Note to self always carry lights, even in summer. We got home in the dark.
Carry an extra layer, even in summer. I didn’t.
Carry more food. As a gluten and dairy free fuss pot I’m going to get these Beond Bars.
Btw I just like these products, this is not a sponsored post and they’re not affiliate links.
