We recently dropped by Dinefwr Park – a National Trust spot on the way back from a week in Pembrokeshire. They have a walkway through some marshes on the way up to an amazing castle. We stopped for a bit of pond dipping, which is a great outdoor activity you can do with pre-schoolers.
What you need:
• Smaller container, like a humus pot if you want to take anything home
• Identification chart or book
• Magnifying glass
So we filled the tray with pond water trying to get clear water. Straight away we caught a few little bugs. Then we made a figure of 8 pattern in the water. We emptied the net out into the large container. We’d caught loads of little blighters that scuttled around the bottom of the container. The 3-yo was delighted. We were really rubbish at identifying the bugs but it was a lot of fun for both of us.
