Some colleagues and I decided to take on the 15 peaks challenge or as it’s also called the Welsh 3000s, having completed the 3 peaks the year before. This was to raise money for Sue Ryder, and we raised a good figure. Yay to us.
I love a good challenge like this, a milestone on the horizon to train for. So I got running, cycling and walking in training. It was also a great excuse to get some new walking boots, that a broke in walking into work.
We went up on the Friday night and stayed in a great youth hostel in Conwy the night before. Then headed up to the first peak, this was pretty steep to get up there, but it wasn’t long before we ticked off the first peak. I’m not going to go through the whole route, you can read more about it here.
We really picked a great weekend. Blisteringly hot. The only downside was that the Lions were playing the decider against Australia, and we had no reception up there.
More peaks were picked off. Five down…
Unfortunately as we planned day two we quickly realised that we couldn’t make all the peaks. We’d also met some other 15 peakers and they confirmed as much; the half way campsite wasn’t really half way.
The second day we skipped Tryfan, Glyder Fawr and a few others and headed straight for Snowdon.
The highlight for me was Cribb Gogh. Loved the knife-edge ridge, the scrambling and the views.
When we started the Snowdon descent, two guys decided to run. Perhaps to get the minibus ready, perhaps to catch the end of Andy Murray winning Wimbledon, perhaps for the giggle. I joined them, tired legs and mind in overdrive, and we leapt and danced the whole way down, keeping pace with 3 peakers, but with the freedom of a timeframe out the window.
So I think we did 11 or so peaks, although we slightly stopped counting. I now have a plan about how to finish it however. I don’t mind not doing it in 24 hours… The key is wild camping. Don’t come off the hill. This just waists time and is a logistical nightmare. Also keep the group small and decision-making tight, maybe just between two.
Anyone want to do it with me?
